Canterbury Foodbank had an incredible, dare I say impossible, amount of precooked, packaged beetroot filling the majority of their warehouse in Spring. In order to help them shift more of it, Tiny Shops held a beetroot cooking and tasting competition.
Competition was hot! Our neighbouring Fish and Chip Shop owners were the first to bring in their entries. In total eleven entries ranging from beetroot salads, salsas, dips, pink lemonade, and even two types of beetroot ice-cream were brought to the judging table. Over 30 visitors to Tiny Shops tasted, then voted for their favourites.
The People’s Choice was a beetroot salad – interestingly it was the only entry containing any meat.
Made by regular visitor Jenny – her prize was yet another box of beetroot. She was happy and went on to take an extra four!
Jenny is a regular Tiny Shops visitor who always kindly brings donations to the food pantry as well as coming in to see what’s in stock.
The voting aspect to this cooking event was really fun with lots of people exchanging opinions over their very pink lunch!
